Have you noticed that many of our exercises have rather unexpected names and accompanying pictures? We feature exercises like "Suspicious" and "Mean Bitch," but none called "Blissful" or "Delighted." So, why the negative names?
The Science Behind Facial Expressions
Did you know that your face is the most muscle-dense area of your body? Even your top eyelid alone has two muscles hiding within its tiny, thin skin! It's fascinating, but what's even more intriguing is that out of the approximately 26 muscles on each side of your face, only about three are solely devoted to smiling and expressing purely positive emotions.
Evolutionary Insights
This may suggest that in the pre-language era, expressing a wide range of negative emotions was more critical for survival than simply having a laugh. Back then, we had to 'say' everything quickly without uttering a word. Emotions put our facial muscles in motion, with specific emotions wired to specific muscles.
Relatable and Memorable Exercises
At Zuza Facial Fitness, we name our exercises after emotions that typically engage the required muscles. This makes them more relatable, easier to copy, and memorable. Of course, this approach is somewhat simplistic, as any emotional state can have many faces. We struggled to find the right names for certain exercises.
For example, the one called "Freeze" used to be "Shocked," and "Yuck!" used to be "Stinks!" In the end, we settled on names that seemed the most straightforward and yes, stereotypical, for the required muscle in motion.
The Importance of a Balanced Workout
Nobody likes grumpy faces, but to build a harmonious, well-balanced face, you have to exercise the majority of the 26 muscles, not just the three smiling ones. Embracing these expressions helps you achieve a smoother, younger-looking face.
So, fall in love with every "Mean Bitch" face you pull while exercising. Each one takes you closer to the youthful, radiant face you desire.
Embrace the process and enjoy the transformation!
